Naomba mchangie! Sanaaaaa!! Kipala I only understand half of your message because of language differences. I only add articles translated by Translators Without Borders. See [1] -- 15:36, 15 Septemba 2015 (UTC)--Lucas559 (majadiliano) 15:37, 15 Septemba 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hi Lucas, good to know that you don`t understand Swahili. In that case you can forget the message. It was a request to our frequent editors to contribute to the discussion about limitations for unregistered users to start articels on swwiki. -- Why don`t you give a short info about yourself on your user page? English ok. Kipala (majadiliano) 15:50, 15 Septemba 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]

And by the way: if you do the uploads on swwiki -kindly have an eye on not overwriting existing entries. It is not so difficult to see to it that existing entries are integrated into expansion of articles. I imagine that from your part this may sometimes be a complication - but that is a rule on this wiki (elsewhere too, I think). And of course it is desirable also from your point of view that the links are joined to existing categories and existing entries. Cheers! Kipala (majadiliano) 15:55, 15 Septemba 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Kipala , I try and avoid imposing content from English onto other languages. Here is our latest translation [2]. It is from a new translator. Could you please give me your opinion on its quality. It is based on this content [3]. Thanks. (I will try to get the disease infobox working when I get some time.)

Feedback [[Ekinokokasi] / ukoma

Hi Lucas, you asked me about 2 new entries, one being Ekinokokasi and the other ukoma.

  1. Ekinokasi is not really understandable. Either your new translator dabbled with google-translate or he has problems getting a Swahili sentence right.
  2. Ukoma is also rather poor Swahili with mangled constructions but better (not as bad).

Please tell what your concern with the box is. I will try to understand. From my view I'd ather try to get the Swahili straight and understandable.

If you are the guy who uploads kindly remember 2 simple rules (for the beginning..):

  • remember to set the interwiki (left side, at "languages"/ "edit links", to enwiki and the English entry.
  • be sure it is categorized, at least under "Jamii:Magonjwa"

I appreciate very much that you communicate about questions coming up! Kipala (majadiliano) 19:46, 30 Septemba 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Thanks for the feedback about the translations. We will see what the next translations look like and I might exclude certain people if their work is not straight and understandable.--Lucas559 (majadiliano) 16:32, 6 Oktoba 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]
The infoboxes seem fine. Maybe I was mistaken.--Lucas559 (majadiliano) 16:32, 6 Oktoba 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Lymphatic filariasis / Matende[hariri chanzo]

Hi Lucas, you see I did a bit on this entry. My advice for these health articles: never (mostly) start with just a translation of an enwiki entry. Take the first sentence(s) for a description what the disease is about and what it does. Then go to causes etc. Let them formulate off the cuff from their sound minds. Even in English (which is not my language) these entries in scientific lingo are hard stuff to read. In swahili the translations easily turn out just to be blabber which cannot (or hardly) be understood. There is a tradition of writing encyclopedic entries in a very dense language, which comes from the times when the stuff was printed on paper and you had to be economical to save money. We are on the internet and can afford more space to be user friendly. Do you understand Swahili and can judge what I changed? Kipala (majadiliano) 21:15, 20 Oktoba 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  • Thanks for your edits and advice. I cannot understand Swahili to judge what you changed. We asked translators to use simple words and keep sentences short. But we do prefer to use the correct medical terms (which are difficult to understand). Lucas559 (majadiliano) 23:43, 20 Oktoba 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • Kipala, are you okay with me uploading content first and then asking you to check it second? I could also show you the project's control panel and you could upload the content yourself. That is more work for you, but also more control. Lucas559 (majadiliano) 23:43, 20 Oktoba 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]
For clearness it is absolutely ok and necessary to use the scientific terms. But as long as there is a Swahili name the entry should use that one first, add the English and the scientific name (if different) in brackets and make sure there are redirects from the scientific and the English name to the Swahili lemma. So that you reach the entry easily from any name a person might start with, but is still readable (and recognizable!) for an average user. Do I guess correctly that several of your translators are Kenyans? (nothing against Kenya, I lived there for 7 ys and love the country..). Well our readers are more Tanzanian, but I in many things Kenyans use more English terms while speaking Swahili. So it would be good to advise translators to go for a google check which often can help. Like in this case the translator a bit timidly mentioned the term "tende". I was not sure myself and now live far away and have no other Swahili speaker around the corner. I checked my dictionaries (is it clear which ones your guys use and have available?). TUKI Swa-Eng gives "tende, matende" for the desease and "tende, tende" for the fruit. Google check for "tende" gives mostly fruit-related results; but "matende" give lots of desease related entries. In this case the google result leaves no doubt which one the term is.
Else upload and do make sure they are categorized (i ask you to use "Jamii:Magonjwa" or subcats and also "Jamii:Translators without Borders"), because we already have quite a lot of health entries which need review. Kindly go thru the older uploads and check that the 2 categories are on them. As far as I remember many of these have the problem of readability, but often can be made more useful by some modification in the opening paragraph. There is also a problem with the "swahilization" of English terms which several times look pretty random to me; this will have to wait until we get an editor with local medical knowledge (what are the Swahili / Swahilized terms they learn in medical school in Tanzania and Kenya?)
One thing more you can do even with limited Swahili: try to see if the translators just put the often complicated opening sentences of the ENglish articles into Swahili or if they try to start with a few words what the desease is about and what it does to people. If they did not think of that, send it back. If there is an aerticle on SIMPLE English, let them check that first for the opening part (not always helpful but often)Kipala (majadiliano) 08:45, 21 Oktoba 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Hi Lucas, I just went a bit thru Leptospirosis. The tranlator had a faible for using brackets like ([WORD]) which does not give any meaningful result in wikipedia syntax. If you look at entries before upload - such formalities could help, together with looking at categories (cf above) and interwiki links (often forgotten). Just a question: are your translators volunteers or do you pay them some allowance? Kipala (majadiliano) 06:14, 22 Oktoba 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • Kipala, the translators are volunteers. If we get some funding, we might try for a bunch of translations and provide some allowance and on-the-ground technical support.Lucas559 (majadiliano) 15:40, 22 Oktoba 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • As for interwiki links, can you look at [4] and [5] one article is about the disease and one (I think) has more focus on the virus. Which article would people looking up ebola find? Perhaps they should be merged. Lucas559 (majadiliano) 15:40, 22 Oktoba 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Merging is the idea of the "unganisha"-Box on top of both, someone (!) has to it. Maradhi ya virusi vya ebola has no interwiki because it was written as a doublette (and maybe author did not care anyway..) Ok when all are volunteers it is difficult to complain. we have to thank them. problem is that they often do not check left and right, thus do not notice existing articles so that they use new terminologies which just give red links and thus unfortunately do not use the potential we have already (and may lead to unneccessary doublettes like with ebola which again causes more work). Like in Leptospirosis he used "ugonjwa wa manjano" whereas we have homa ya manjano, homa ya manjano C and Homanyongo (which by the way I just notice is a mess between Yellow Fever and Hepatitis - what do we do??). But it will help when you check jamii and interwiki before uploading. Kipala (majadiliano) 17:46, 22 Oktoba 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Mixup homa ya manjano, homa ya manjano C and Homanyongo[hariri chanzo]

I just stumbled about this problem. Do you have someone to put again on Homanyongo? Language is mixing all the time between the terms for hepatitis and yellow fever. That is a problems which also goes across dictionaries but not so helpful medically. Usage should be consistent here at wikipedia. At the moment we have

  • homa ya manjano (Yellow fever),
  • homa ya manjano C (hepatitis C)
  • Homanyongo (hepatitis, but it uses "homa ya manjano" in the 2nd part of the entry - I guess the author started with it and later came across that it should be homanyongo, but did not work thru his translation).

Kipala (majadiliano) 18:15, 22 Oktoba 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Another ombi (polite request) for your pre-upload checks: Did the author also mention the English name in brackets if he starts with Swahili lemma (which is better if possible!) and did he put up the redirects from thescientific name and the english name to the swahili lemma? Kipala (majadiliano) 18:24, 22 Oktoba 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Ok tried to to repair at least hepatitis C by running the text thru a replace procedure in word, without checking yet, and moving all to Homanyongo C.Lets see. Kipala (majadiliano) 20:08, 22 Oktoba 2015 (UTC)Reply[reply]

New Articles[hariri chanzo]

user:Riccardo Riccioni, user:Kipala, user:Chriko, here are some articles that were recently uploaded. I forgot to add categories (e.g., [[jamii:Magonjwa]]), but looks like other users are helping correct that. All done by the same volunteer, so any problem is likely consistent across these articles. I hope they add valuable medical content to

Medical Translation - Success[hariri chanzo]

user:Kipala, user:ChriKo, user:Riccardo Riccioni I would like to share some great news. Our translations have 12,081 pageviews in June 2016. You help and edits means people have free access to accurate medical information. Thanks for your support. Our next initiative is 40 articles on women's health. If you can help or recommend volunteers, that would be much appreciated. --Lucas559 (majadiliano) 18:02, 2 Agosti 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Dear Lucas, I think that is great news!! To be honest, some of the material is useless bullshit, but altogether I do think it is very much worthwhile altogether. Keep it up. And if you manage to convince your translators to check existing articles and existing terminology plus interwikis etc it will be better! Cheers Kipala (majadiliano) 22:41, 2 Agosti 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Hi, congratulations! I subscribe all what written by Kipala. Moreover, about the new series of articles, I ask you to consider that many things considered good in the West are not so for Africans. I myself don't aknowledge as "neutral" many articles in en.wikipedia, but if you try to edit them, you will be frustrated! In particular, "they" don't allow some positions on sexual ethics! I like very much sw.wikipedia because it is different. Please, do respect African worldview! It has its wisdom... Peace to you! --Riccardo Riccioni (majadiliano) 13:04, 3 Agosti 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Hi, let me add my voice to those of my friends. I agree with what they are saying. There is still quite some work needed to improve the quality of the translations. However, this is already a very good start and I am sure the articles are already providing valuable information to readers. ChriKo (majadiliano) 18:58, 3 Agosti 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]
user:Kipala, user:ChriKo, user:Riccardo Riccioni, great to hear your feedback. It is unlikely I can find better translators. But with your help, we can make these translations suitable for (If a translation is too much work to improve, I can exclude that translator.) Good medicine is universal, so I think almost all of the 40 priority articles should exist in (1) Please suggest what you think are exceptions and perhaps help edit those topics. (2) Do you have any Wikipedians that can help with these women's health articles? --Lucas559 (majadiliano) 05:09, 4 Agosti 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]
