Uvuvi ni kazi ya kukamata samaki ndani ya maji na kuwaweka nje yake, lakini pia kufuga samaki na wanyama wengine wa majini.

Kusudi lake ni hasa kupata chakula (kitoweo) na muda mwingine hufanywa kama biashara ili kujipatia kipato. Tena siku hizi uvuvi unatokea pia kama burudani, katika utalii na kama sehemu ya michezo.

Uvuvi ni kati ya shughuli za kale kabisa za binadamu na katika uchumi huhesabiwa katika sekta za msingi pamoja na kilimo na uchimbaji wa madini. Kutokana na takwimu za FAO kuna watu milioni 38 duniani wanaofanya kazi ya kuvua au kufuga samaki na hivyo husaidia kukuza uchumi wa nchi fulani.

Pamoja na wengine wanaosafirisha windo na kulifanyia kazi viwandani au kuliuza masokoni, madukani au kwenye hoteli kuna zaidi ya watu milioni 500 wanaokimu maisha yao kutokana na sekta hii ya uvuvi. [1]

Uvuvi hufanywa penye magimba ya maji kama vile bahari, maziwa, mito au mabwawa. Mara nyingi wavuvi hutumia chombo cha kusafiria majini kama boti lakini wengine wanakaa ufukoni na kuvua kutoka nchi kavu.

Vyombo vya uvuvi ni aina za nyavu zinazoweza kushika samaki na kumvuta nje ya maji, ndoano au pia aina za mikuki inayolenga samaki walio karibu na uso wa maji.

Tunapaswa kulinda bahari, maziwa pamoja na mito ili mazalia ya samaki yazidi kuongezeka na pia tupige vita uvuvi haramu kwa kuwa husababisha kuwa nyuma kwa sekta ya uvuvi.

Inabidi serikali ziweke ulinzi kwenye suala la uvuvi kwani kuna wavuvi haramu wanaotumia sumu, baruti na vinginevyo vingi ambavyo havitakiwi katika uvuvi.
