Tanzanian week in Ukrainian wiki

[hariri chanzo]

Hi everyone! Sorry for writing here in English. My name is Vasyl and I am an editor of ukrainian wikipedia. We're going to spend at least two weeks writing articles about Tanzania (August 13-26). If you know that some article might be interesting or important to know for ukrainian readers - leave your suggestions here. We'll be thankfull for that.

Would be greate if your suggestion have english or russian version. If you want - you can write some articles about Ukraine - we had such type of cooperation with estonian, macedonian, armenian, yakut, urdu and bellorussian wiki.

With best regards! Шиманський Василь (majadiliano) 06:22, 7 Agosti 2018 (UTC)[jibu]

Thank you for being interested in our country. Of course, there are a lot of articles both in Swahili and English Wikipedia. We propose to use them, starting with our geography (so special: islands, mountains, lakes, rivers, parks etc.) and history (archaeology, struggles against colonialism, Julius Nyerere and other political personality) without forgetting our biological diversity (human tribes, animals, vegetation etc.). I think you will enjoy in knowing more about us. May the Lord give you his peace! --Riccardo Riccioni (majadiliano) 06:33, 7 Agosti 2018 (UTC)[jibu]
Hi! Tanzanian week ended two weeks ago, so we have some good results) 188 articles was created and 5 - improved. With best regards! Шиманський Василь (majadiliano) 09:10, 17 Septemba 2018 (UTC)[jibu]
Very well. Peace to your country and to the whole world! --Riccardo Riccioni (majadiliano) 14:09, 19 Septemba 2018 (UTC)[jibu]

Warsha kuhusu makala zetu za astronomia kwenye Septemba 2018

[hariri chanzo]

Kunasehemu ambako unaweza kubofya "endorse". Kipala (majadiliano) 07:21, 8 Agosti 2018 (UTC)[jibu]

Editing of sitewide CSS/JS is only possible for interface administrators from now

[hariri chanzo]

(Please help translate to your language)

Hi all,

as announced previously, permission handling for CSS/JS pages has changed: only members of the interface-admin (Interface administrators) group, and a few highly privileged global groups such as stewards, can edit CSS/JS pages that they do not own (that is, any page ending with .css or .js that is either in the MediaWiki: namespace or is another user's user subpage). This is done to improve the security of readers and editors of Wikimedia projects. More information is available at Creation of separate user group for editing sitewide CSS/JS. If you encounter any unexpected problems, please contact me or file a bug.

Thanks!

Kigezo:Kimdomo

[hariri chanzo]

Kipala (majadiliano) 15:05, 18 Septemba 2018 (UTC)[jibu]

Mfano Jinekomastia, sijachunguia bado zote. Sipenda mtindo wake, lakini napenda kusikia wengine wanasemaje. Nilimwandikia na kumwomba asiendelee sasa. Kipala (majadiliano) 18:17, 2 Julai 2019 (UTC)[jibu]

Hi, I don't read Swahili but it concerns me that you are defending the use of spam links in your articles. Are you aware that a significant portion of Internet spam relates to products that enhance sexual performance? [5][6] --Rschen7754 19:09, 2 Julai 2019 (UTC)[jibu]
Hi, @Kipala:, I saw the discussion on meta, so I thought it’d be good to comment here. I know that Praxidicae can move fast sometimes, but this is because these links are a major problem across Wikimedia projects. She’s trying to be helpful, and is highly respected for this type of work in the global community. I know you mean well as well, but I think if a global sysop is reverting, it’s best to ask them why they’re doing it rather than tell them to stop. They typically have experience dealing with this sort of stuff, and do it for a reason. Thanks for all the work you’ve done on sw.wiki :) TonyBallioni (majadiliano) 19:26, 2 Julai 2019 (UTC)[jibu]
Hi Tony, hi Rschen7754. Thanks for chipping in. Just to be clear: Yes, can you imagine that after many years on the internet I might be aware that sexual content is a large percentage of the bullsh.. floating around? Why don't you take the time to read the discussion which Praxidicae removed from her sw talk page so you notice that I did not raise the topic of defending the use of spam links? Just try to imagine that after quite a few years building swwiki from a tiny site to the most read African language wikipedia I may have encountered a bit of spam (and threw it out?).
I asked her to wait and stop for a while until we discuss it in the community. We have had much help from "outsiders" (Swahili illiterates) over time and appreciate it, especially as far as spam is concerned. My request (please read again what it is about) is a reaction to her more than 30 edits in 2 days. I did not have time to check all of these (we are a very small team) and one of the first I saw was removal of a sensible blogspot reference. I know it is mostly not accepted on enwiki but we do accept on case by case basis. Surekly she also hit a number which are better removed.
The world of an small African language wikipedia is sometimes a bit different from the world of enwiki or dewiki (the 2 where I have edited, too). Our main challenge is to build up a community and nurturing new editors. Which means sometimes tolerating content which would be difficult to maintain at enwiki. So unless there is straight pornography or straight advertisement we first talk to editors before we throw out their stuff. (I know it looks like luxury from enwiki pov, but thats our nettiquette, and I would expect even a galactic sysop to show some respect). And this does not go with a style of coming in and doing 30 reverts (maybe mostly "correct") in 2 days without a word. I did not criticise or attack Praxidicae for what she did, as she never talked to us nor we to her before, so she may not understand, I just asked her to pause a bit. Is this understandable? Kipala (majadiliano) 20:48, 2 Julai 2019 (UTC)[jibu]
This is a blatant misrepresentation of what happened. First, I removed spam links, several of them in fact, you are correct about that. I communicated with you when asked. However am I understanding correctly that you wanted me to talk to the editor who added them first? They are globally locked and maliciously spamming content, so even if I had asked them about it - they cannot respond as they are locked. Second, you state that you want to encourage people to help out here and yet as soon as I did help, due simply to the fact that I manually corrected more than a dozen (I didn't revert most of them, that was just a handful) blatantly spammy and scammy links, you demanded I stop editing. That makes no sense. The fact that his is a small project and in another language isn't really relevant. Spam is spam and it damages all projects. Your assumption that my edits are incorrect just on the basis that I do not speak Swahili is discouraging and ultimately wrong. If you look at most of them, the content I removed again, is spam and even the actual edit on this project are in english. Perhaps I did screw up some of the syntax of the language but that can be fixed. Mass addition of scam/spam links should require immediate removal. Is your concern I've somehow damaged the project? If so, could you explain why my edits concern you specifically pertaining to policies locally and globally? Thanks. Praxidicae (majadiliano) 21:00, 2 Julai 2019 (UTC)[jibu]
You also keep bringing up enwiki but fail to look at my global contributions. I'm not just an enwiki editor despite my native language being English. Your insistence that spam or scam links might or should be tolerated here is inherently incompatible with Wikimedia's terms of use. I don't know if that was your intent to say but if you could clarify that, it would be appreciated. I'd also like to continue with the removal as there are still many remaining scam links here.
Dear Praxidicae, you sound as if you feel insulted. I am sorry for that. If I was impolite I gladly apologize. My request was in response to the 29 removal edits you did in 2 days. Kindly help us to understand it.
I advised you that we do try to talk to editors who make mistakes and expects other to keep up this nettiquette. (unless we see cases of pornography, advertising, copy-paste). Do I understand correctly that you think this is not advisable nor doable because “They are globally locked and maliciously spamming content”. Even if I look horribly uneducated I ask you who is “They”? Kindly name the globally locked accounts whch you found active on our pages, it will help us to recognize them soon.
I understood further that you talk about “Mass addition of scam/spam links”. Which of the edits you threw out referred to these?
I see that you threw out a number of edits of user:Jimmymwandishi. Is that a global malicious spammer ? Is he blocked globally but still active here at sw? From his style of editing content he does not look like any of the spam attacks I have seen (although his contributions are weak).
I did not have time yet to go thru all your edits (yesterday night internet here was lost, today I have littletime after a long day). I wrote to you yesterdy after seeing you removed content from some pages which had just been patrolled by one of our esteemed team members, and could not see that you had contacted him, and saw the removal of the sentence (NO LINK!) "Jina estrojeni pia linaweza kutumika kwa kitu chochote ambacho chaiga homoni hii ya estrojeni kama vile dawa ambazo hupewa wanawake ili wawe na ashiki ya ngono. " in the article "Estrojeni". What made you think this was malicious spam? I also saw you removed a part of text (one internal link to enwiki) in the article karanga (removing the correct sentence Jina la Kibiolojia la njugu ni Arachis hypogaea'' and giving as reason "rv-spam") . What made you think this is malicious spam as per your argument? And: I do not believe it helps anything dropping abbreviations which nobody understands. Kipala (majadiliano) 21:59, 3 Julai 2019 (UTC)[jibu]

Praxidicae (majadiliano) 21:03, 2 Julai 2019 (UTC)[jibu]

Your position on spam and promotional material is concerning - as has been mentioned, (undisclosed) paid editing is against the Wikimedia Terms of Use. For what it is worth, I have served as a steward and while spam was not an area I focused on, I am familiar with how small wikis work (and quite frankly, the problems that come up when small wikis act like a walled garden and are hostile to outsiders). --Rschen7754 00:43, 3 Julai 2019 (UTC)[jibu]
Dear Rschen, you might be helpful if you can show what you mean by claiming a) that I “defend the use of spam links” and “(undisclosed) paid editing”. Which edits do you refer to? If you have anything to show that we at swwiki “act like a walled garden and are hostile to outsiders”, please do!. We are very happy to learn. Kipala (majadiliano) 21:59, 3 Julai 2019 (UTC)[jibu]
You are literally questing every single edit Praxidicae makes, and quite frankly treating her worse than the spammers. Please reconsider. --Rschen7754 01:10, 4 Julai 2019 (UTC)[jibu]
I note that I do not see much fact in your answer compared to the language you chose to use. Thanks for the advice! Kipala (majadiliano) 06:13, 4 Julai 2019 (UTC)[jibu]
Hi Kipala, I understand where you are coming from, because we also frequently have this confusion on large projects regarding linkspaming, especially with cross-wiki spammers. Unfortunately, administrators on many projects, large and small, are not aware of the danger that some of these links and how they can seriously undermine the image of Wikimedia projects as well as the computer security of our readers. There are only a few users who are really good with dealing with this type of work globally, and Praxidicae is one of them.

That being said, I understand your concerns about growing your community, but the unfortunate reality is that these accounts were never going to be a part of your community: a steward was guaranteed to lock them when they were made aware that the accounts existed, and Praxidicae was doing her best to help here, in an area that she specializes in from a global standpoint, both on small wikis and large ones. Thank you for listening to me even though I'm not an active editor here, and again, thank you for your work on this project. TonyBallioni (majadiliano) 00:56, 3 Julai 2019 (UTC)[jibu]

Tony, I appreciate your kind remarks. You asked me to understand that “these accounts” have to be acted against. Which are “these accounts” you refer to as being handled by Praxidicae’s edits? Kipala (majadiliano) 21:59, 3 Julai 2019 (UTC)[jibu]
Hi Kipala, Jimmwandishi and Mwangi2017 were the two accounts she was dealing with most recently, and they are both currently globally locked by stewards. TonyBallioni (majadiliano) 04:21, 4 Julai 2019 (UTC)[jibu]
Tony, thanks for this reply which is the first in this discussion that helps me to understand more. I notice that the blocks were done after Praxidicae’s removal activity, not before (18:02, 2 July 2019). So I am not sure why she informed me they had to be done because the accounts were blocked. When I try to look into the present rules for global sysops, I see they are a kind of super-steward. So can I assume that the description for stewards applies to them? For stewards I read they are there to assist local communities. As you can see we have some active admins at swwiki (not the formal 10) I do expect that there should be at last an attempt for communication before a (in our scale) massive intervention. I tried to talk to Praxidicae last year but she never reacted then. She has been on and off dring the last year (and was never inhibited, that much for some complaints above). In general we are very open to outside assistance; we are qute busy removing spam and malicious edits (I am a happy blocker, probably anywhere in the 3 digits on our small wiki).
In this case it would have been a good practise in my view if one sees a problem in edits of a user, to talk to the admin who has been communicating with this account. In both examples of user:Jimmwandishi and user:Mwangi2017 this was the case. Something like "Hey I see that NN looks to me loke a spammer, is using xxx. Are you aware, can I be of help?". I do not know how they define "Mass addition of scam/spam" but I cannot see this situation with 2 (still weak) contributors who have done some 80 edits each in 2 years (is that mass?). They are weak but tried to contribute sensibly, and I have not seen a pattern of promoting any specific content in their links. They look like typically getting anything from google search related to a topic and putting it in as a source.
Now this action has removed a number of unworthy (and not malign) references, but also left behind a number of mutilated articles (which, if not done by someone with the designation steward, I would consider as something similar to vandalism). Which we could have done in a better way if there had been communication before. Any barnstars to be given? (and by the way, i tell our newbies in traing sessions that they should not worry too much if their edits are reverted or thrown out, because the people checking edits on large projects are wading thru heaps of shit and nonsense every hour and thus may become understandably a bit tired and rash in decisions... I would attribute the removal of some innocent text parts which I quoted above to such circumstance) Kipala (majadiliano) 08:10, 4 Julai 2019 (UTC)[jibu]
I understand the block for Jimmwandishi, for I deleted many spam-like links by him, but non that of Mwangi2017, a simple and good contributor in different kinds of pages who is desiderous of learning from us how do better. Please, let you revert the block. Peace to you all! --Riccardo Riccioni (majadiliano) 10:37, 4 Julai 2019 (UTC)[jibu]
Hi Riccardo Riccioni and Kipala, Praxidicae was removing these before the global lock because she had already requested a lock. The only thing that needed to happen was a steward to come around and lock, and this was all but guaranteed to be done: both accounts were link spammers and Mwangi2017 had already been blocked on en.wiki for sockpuppetry and spamming by @Yunshui:, another CheckUser and sysop on that project.

As I said, I get that this type of thing isn't widely understood: linkspamming is difficult to spot and we have sysops on all projects who aren't familiar with it. At the same time, these removals were solidly good because the links were promotional and some may in fact have been malicious (I refuse to visit them once it becomes clear they are not trustworthy URLs).

As for the good content: this is a common technique link spammers user: they add content that looks appropriate while their real goal is to include advertising links or even malicious links in articles. They're normally just deleted or completely reverted because it is too difficult to figure out what is true, what isn't, and what is just fluff meant to hide bad links. Praxidicae was acting within normal standards for dealing with cross-wiki linkspamming, which is why I think you're attracting attention of people like Rschen7754 and myself who are active on meta and familiar with how spam is dealt with globally. Anyway, again, thank you both for listening, because I know it is annoying to have someone from another project come and explain things, but I'm just trying to clarify why Praxidicae did what she did, and explain that it was in fact within global norms of behaviour. TonyBallioni (majadiliano) 18:25, 4 Julai 2019 (UTC)[jibu]

Hi Tony, Thank you for your effort but I have to state that I do not agree with some parts of your explanation and I do not think that this a realistic view of these 2 cases.

Mwangi 2017 was blocked on enwiki (for what reasons soever) back in 2017 which is not my business. He has been present low-level on swwiki, edited, took advice and communicated with the guidance we gave him, and improved. That is an important aim we work for in our environment. There is not the slightest hint of malicious editing (if you see please show!), and surely no logic in assuming a malicious spammer stumbles over 2 years trying to edit honorable content with few edits in order to create an image of good-will. We block and throw out all the time malicious contributors (I did 3 permant blocks today - and we are usually very happy with the support we have from global level). I have not seen any argument in his case alleging bad intent. I can count and the numbers give no argument whatsoever for "Mass addition of scam/spam" which Praxidicae alleged. Mwangi 2017 is quite typical for a number of people we have here.

I save my breath about Jimmwandishi because my colleague considers him a pain in the ass, although even here there is no hint whatsoever of malicious editing.

I have no reason to doubt Praxidicae generally does a good and commendable job. But this action and the blown up debate was definitively not good practice. I have no taste to get into "global" debates but if it is considered "normal" to be upset about a request to communicate with a local active community before taking action, something is wrong with the attitude at that level. I cannot imagine this is agreed policy. As said before, I am personally thankful for global interventions (saw a few today!) but this was not a good practice. And we want Mwangi 2017 back, plus without strange abbreviations instead of understandable communication. Please help us to know the procedure.Kipala (majadiliano) 19:33, 4 Julai 2019 (UTC)[jibu]

Wapendwa naona wakiulizwa kuleta mifano wanasita, tuone kama ukimya unaendelea. Namwelewa Riccardo anataka Mwangi2017 arudishwe. Kwa hiyo je tupinge azimio pale Meta? Kuhusu Jimmwandishi kimsingi jambo si tofauti sana ingawa alikuwa mgumu kiasi. Tumwache alivyo? Kipala (majadiliano) 08:01, 5 Julai 2019 (UTC)[jibu]
Hata mimi naunga mkono arudishwe.
Kesi ya "Mwangi2017" nimeikuta Meta: hapa—shida moja tu, mjadala wake umefungwa. Labda uuanzishe upya? Huyu mama kamshikilia kweli huyo jamaa.--'Muddyb Mwanaharakati' 'Longa' 12:09, 5 Julai 2019 (UTC)[jibu]
Mwangi is also a spammer. They are confirmed by a checkuser to Anjakretfep who is also spamming links cross-wiki but not only that, both were blocked elsewhere for terms of use violations which are not specific to anyone project, but all of them. Praxidicae (majadiliano) 12:30, 5 Julai 2019 (UTC)[jibu]
Kipala I'd also like to clarify that the fact that I am a global sysop is irrelevant to this discussion as nothing prevents any editor in good standing from editing where they please. I took no action here that could be even remotely construed as being done under the tools of a global sysop. I'd also like to add that these edits by Jimmiwandishi are not the edits of a good faith contributor, but someone who is spamming and that's just the first 30+ edits - I haven't gone through the rest as of yet, but I wanted to lay it out in clear terms for anyone who is confused as to why this is so blatantly a promo only account. There are a few scattered edits (less than 10) in which they add no links or valid links mixed with blatant scam/spam sites. Praxidicae (majadiliano) 13:09, 5 Julai 2019 (UTC)[jibu]
Thank you for showing examples, that does help. I now had time to go through the first 5 of your list. Wallah bin Wallah is definitively a person deserving an article (which the author did relatively solidly in not too good Swahili). So do you refer to the literature links like "Zawadi ya Sanda" which are disguised invites to http://freelancinghackers.com ? Yes, I have to accept, that is a very valid argument. Did you refer to these?Kipala (majadiliano) 13:42, 5 Julai 2019 (UTC)[jibu]
Kipala Can you please clarify your question? Those are not the only links I'm referring to and especially in the case of Mwangi, who repeatedly links this blatant spam and scam site that has no encyclopedic relevance anywhere. These are simply not good faith contributions, whether misguided or not, these put readers at great risk. Kipala, I'm also quite concerned about your earlier statements that you know some of the websites are spam but have no choice because there aren't better sources in Swahili, but this doesn't make sense to me as I've demonstrated that more than 90% of those sources I've tried to remove and still need to be removed are in English.Praxidicae (majadiliano) 13:55, 5 Julai 2019 (UTC)[jibu]

  • I'd also like to note after some research the links to this site are not educational either and interestingly enough, the same urls they are spamming there, are the same ones Jimmiwandishi, Hreflafa, JanetKihumba as well as KunguwaWambui who did so on ki.wikipedia. See links here, which almost entirely overlap with these users.
I too had suspected that Jimmwandishi, Hreflafa and JanetKihumba were one thing. --Riccardo Riccioni (majadiliano) 15:12, 5 Julai 2019 (UTC)[jibu]
Hapa anaonyesha bei ya kuingiza viungo kwetu, basi tuwe macho!
Praxidicae As for your remark about clarifying my question: I reacted to the list you posted upstairs. No let me say that I am grateful for your intervention because we have learned something which had not recognized. Having said this, I imagine this interaction could have proceeded smoother with some communication before. None of us had seen a previuos warning from you to Jimmwandishi (the account edited swwiki only, plus 4x commons) which would have helped to understand the need for action. (Please enlighten me: is this not the usual procedure? That is at least what I remember from here and what we follow except in extrem cases (his hidden links to the "freelancinghackers" I consider as such but you had not yet reached there). Previous communication would have enabled us to recognize the problem, do the removals (with guidance fom you?) and avoid the problem we have now of checking for the mutilated pages left behind by his clumsy way of setting links you removed. Another point for me to ask you to pause for a while was that I saw not only links but also some correct and unlinked text passages removed (see above, I think it does matter to some extent if I understand the language or not.). Then you list some links as "spam" which are definitely not (like nation.co.ke) which made me wonder. Please rest assured that I have great respect for your work. The question of communication remains. Kipala (majadiliano) 11:32, 6 Julai 2019 (UTC)[jibu]
Thanks to God for the good conclusion of the case. I also have learnt from it. I revised many times the contributions of Jimmwandishi, Hreflafa and JanethKihumba, I guessed also they were the same person, I deleted many of their openly commercial links, I reproached them sometimes and menaced to block them, but I stopped there. When Praxidicae so strongly came in, I appreciated. Let's go on together in peace! --Riccardo Riccioni (majadiliano) 07:34, 7 Julai 2019 (UTC)[jibu]

Update on the consultation about office actions

[hariri chanzo]

Hello all,

Last month, the Wikimedia Foundation's Trust & Safety team announced a future consultation about partial and/or temporary office actions. We want to let you know that the draft version of this consultation has now been posted on Meta.

This is a draft. It is not intended to be the consultation itself, which will be posted on Meta likely in early September. Please do not treat this draft as a consultation. Instead, we ask your assistance in forming the final language for the consultation.

For that end, we would like your input over the next couple of weeks about what questions the consultation should ask about partial and temporary Foundation office action bans and how it should be formatted. Please post it on the draft talk page. Our goal is to provide space for the community to discuss all the aspects of these office actions that need to be discussed, and we want to ensure with your feedback that the consultation is presented in the best way to encourage frank and constructive conversation.

Please visit the consultation draft on Meta-wiki and leave your comments on the draft’s talk page about what the consultation should look like and what questions it should ask.

Thank you for your input! -- The Trust & Safety team 08:03, 16 Agosti 2019 (UTC)
