Vipanya-miti ni wanyama wadogo wa nusufamilia Dendromurinae katika familia Nesomyidae ambao wanafanana na vipanya, lakini vipanya ni wanafamilia wa Muridae. Spishi zote zinatokea Afrika kusini kwa Sahara. Jenasi Dendromus na Steatomys zina usambazaji mkubwa katika Afrika, lakini jenasi nyingine ni dogo na zina sambazaji zilizozuiliwa. Nasaba za jenasi za vipanya-miti bado haina hakika. K.m. Dendromus na Steatomys zina mnasaba mbali kiasi. Leimacomys imepewa juzi nusufamilia yake Leimacomyinae.

Kama jina lao linaashiria vipanya-miti wanaweza kupanda miti sana na spishi nyingi huishi mitini takriban saa zote, isipokuwa spishi za Steatomys (vipanya wanono) ambazo huishi ardhini hasa. Wanyama hawa ni wadogo sana, isipokuwa Kipanya-miti Mkubwa. Rangi yao ni kijivu hadi kahawia na nyeupe chini. Wana mkia mrefu, lakini mkia wa vipanya wanono si sana.
