Meitnerium ni elementi ya kikemia yenye alama ya Mt na namba atomia 109. Ni elementi sintetiki nururifu ambayo haipatikani kiasili lakini inaweza kuundwa katika maabara. Isotopi yake thabiti zaidi ni meitneri-278 iliyo na nusumaisha ya sekunde 4.5.

Ilitegenezwa mara ya kwanza kwenye mwaka 1982 katika maabara ya taasisi ya utafiti wa ioni nzito ya GSI Helmholtz pale Darmstadt, Ujerumani, iliunda kwanza hiki mnamo 1982.

Imepokea jina lake kwa heshima ya mwanafizikia wa kike wa Ujerumani Lise Meitner .

Meitnerium was first synthesized on August 29, 1982 by a German research team led by Peter Armbruster and Gottfried Münzenberg at the Institute for Heavy Ion Research (Gesellschaft für Schwerionenforschung) in Darmstadt.[1] The team bombarded a target of bismuth-209 with accelerated nuclei of iron-58 and detected a single atom of the isotope meitnerium-266:[2]

This work was confirmed three years later at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research at Dubna (then in the Soviet Union).[2]
