Mmea wa Umande jua, ni mojawapo ni mmea wa jenasi ya drosera ambayo ni mojawapo ya jenasi kubwa zaidi za mimea ambao hula nyama. Jenasi ya drosera ina spishi 188.[1] Mimea hii ya familia ya Droseraceae huwavutia, kuwashika na kuwaua wadudu kwa kutumia viungo vyenye kuzalisha maji amabyo ni kama gundi. Wadudu hawa hupendwa na umandejua kwa sababu mmea wenyewe unashindwa unamea katika ardhi isiyokuwa na rotuba ya kutosha. Spishi mbalimbali, ambazo huwa na maumbo tofauti hupatikana katika mabara yote isipokuwa Bara Antaktika.
Sifa za mmea
Umande jua ni mimea inayodumu kwa miaka nyingi (lakini baadhi ya spishi hudumu kwa kipindi cha mwaka mmoja tu). Ina maua madogomadogo yaliyosimama ambayo ni karibu sentimita 1 (incha 0.4) na mita 1 (futi 10) kwa urefu ikitegemea ni spishi ipi .Spishi zinazopanda huwa na shina zinazoweza kuwa ndefu sana hata kufikia mita 3. kama vile spishi ya D. erythrogyne.[2]
Imebainika kuwa mmea wa umande jua unaweza kuishi kwa kipindi cha hata miaka 50.[3] Jinasi hii imezoea zaidi kupata chakula kupitia kula wadudu kiasi kwamba enzaimu ya haina nitrate reducatase[4]) that plants usually use for the uptake of earth-bound nitrates.
